CHIEF DRAFTING TECHNICIAN
JOB CODE 19140
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform highly specialized and complex paraprofessional drafting work and direct Drafting Technicians engaged in technical drafting duties. Assignments to this class are allocated to the Aviation, Engineering and Architectural Services, Street Transportation, and Water Services Departments. The individual assignment determines the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities required. This class is distinguished from Senior Drafting Technician by the more demanding supervisory responsibilities and more difficult and complex technical requirements. Work is performed under the general supervision of a registered architect, professional engineer or supervisor who makes general assignments and reviews results for compliance to schedules.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Architectural Option:
- Prepares project documents for new buildings, remodeling or renovation, or maintenance and repair of existing buildings;
- Reviews and approves shop drawings, selection of colors, fixtures, millwork, and finishes for function and aesthetics;
- Conducts on site job reviews of existing conditions prior to preliminary design work;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Civil Engineering Option:
- Designs, drafts, and prepares plans, specifications, and estimates for city paving, water, storm, sanitary sewer, grading and drainage, and other construction projects;
- Reviews preliminary and final construction plans and specification of public works construction projects to ensure adherence to City standard details and specifications and other governmental agency requirements;
- Prepares final design work involving resolution of problems with utilities, structures, land use changes, and natural geographical conditions;
- Distributes and coordinates work assignments to Drafting Technicians;
- Reviews the work of Senior and Drafting Technicians for compliance to departmental standards of drafting;
- Prepares exhibits for department presentation.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:Skill in:
- Civil engineering or architectural practices and procedures.
- Symbols and terminology used in civil engineering or architectural drawings.
- Drafting requirements of other governmental agencies.
- Principles and practices of supervision and personnel management.
Ability to:
- Drafting instruments and equipment.
- Computer aided drafting equipment.
- Design and/or review the design of civil engineering and public works projects.
- Review preliminary and final construction plans and specifications and make appropriate changes based on project data provided.
- Prepare drawings that are neat, accurate, and logically arranged, utilizing the methods and techniques of drafting.
- Prepare specifications and analytical and technical reports.
- Prepare engineering, architectural, and landscape drawings from sketches, verbal descriptions, specifications, and legal descriptions.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees and the public.
- Communicate orally with customers, clients, and the public using a telephone and in face-to-face, one-on-one settings.
- Measure distance using a tape measure or other measuring device.
- Make fine, highly controlled muscular movements to use drafting instruments and equipment.
- Produce documents written in the English language using proper sentence construction, punctuation, grammar, and spelling.
- Perform a broad range of supervisory responsibilities over others.
- Remain in a sitting position for extended periods of time.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license, and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Five years of experience in drafting engineering work, including one year of experience skilled and technical drafting work (or at the level of Senior Drafting Technician). Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum qualifications may be substituted.
