ENGINEERING AIDE

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform work of elementary and routine difficulty on engineering projects and related activities. Positions allocated to this classification are assigned to several departments, including Engineering and Architectural Services, Street Transportation and Water Services. Work is characterized by the provision of on-the-job training to acquire higher skills in specific areas of the field of specialization. Specific assignments are received from an experienced technician or supervisor and are accompanied by detailed oral or written directions when work is other than routine. Work is reviewed in progress and upon completion.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Indexes and files quarter section maps, record drawings and other engineering reference information;
- Conducts errands such as receiving and delivering prints, coordinating between field and office crews, and searching files for engineering information;
- Estimates the quantity of Plans and Specifications to contractors, plan service organizations and other City departments;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Basic engineering techniques and procedures.
Ability to:
- Add, subtract, multiply and divide commonly used units of measure.
- Learn and apply fundamental engineering techniques.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions in the English language.
- Work cooperatively with others.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
- Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation. This learning takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential or marginal functions depending upon work assignment, location, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Six months satisfactory work experience, within the past three years, in a field related to engineering. Other combinations of experience and education which meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
