SENIOR ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN
JOB CODE 19240
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform technical civil engineering work of average difficulty in the Engineering and Architectural Services, Development Services, Street Transportation, and Water Services Departments. Some positions supervise Engineering Technicians and Engineering Aides. Work is performed under the general supervision of a high level engineering technician, professional engineer, or other supervisor who makes assignments and reviews finished work for compliance with standards and schedules. The variety and greater technical difficulty of work differentiate this classification from the classification of Engineering Technician.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Calculates estimates and final assessments and distributes these to the property for proposed paving and water and sewer line installation;
- Reviews utility and general construction project plans for all permit work requests in the City right-of-way for conformance to City standards and sound engineering principles;
- Receives, investigates, and prepares reports of service requests from the public and other sources addressing vehicle and pedestrian traffic conditions and problems;
- Collects, analyzes, and prepares data for accident studies and reports;
- Prepares work orders for traffic sign installation and street striping;
- Reviews development plans to ensure conformance to City traffic standards;
- Prepares responses to complaints and inquiries from the public;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:Ability to:
- Symbols and terminology used in engineering drawings.
- Construction practices and techniques.
- Communicate orally with other employees, plan holders, and the public by telephone and in a one-to-one, face-to-face setting.
- Produce written documents using proper business English, sentence structure, grammar, and punctuation.
- Employ the practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions, mensuration, logarithms, calculator, practical algebra, geometric construction, and essentials of trigonometry.
- Read and interpret water, wastewater, and right-of-way quarter-sections maps.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications for construction control purposes.
- Research records and files for accurate information regarding construction drawings.
- Operate a mainframe terminal and personal computer workstation using a keyboard device.
- Perform work functions following prescribed safety procedures.
- Use graphic instructions such as blueprints, schematic drawings, layouts, or other visual aids.
- Move light objects (less than 20 pounds) long distances (more than 20 feet).
- Review and check the work products of others to ensure conformance to standards.
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
- Work cooperatively with other employees and the public.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license, and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Three years of experience in paraprofessional engineering work within the past three years. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
