DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform a variety of tasks while learning the skills required to qualify for an entry level technical position such Supplies Clerk I, Engineering Aide, Dispatcher, Laboratory Technician, Communication Technician Aide, Planning Technican I or other classes. Initial assignments are of a routine nature but as the employee's knowledge increases and skill is developed, assignments become more difficult and more judgment is required. Instructions are received both orally and in writing and are quite detailed during early states of training, but become progressively more general as experience is acquired.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Receives, unpacks or stores specialized goods and supplies in proper storage places;
- Operates base radio and maintains radio contact with mobile units on assigned frequency;
- Receives investigation request forms and telephone calls and transmits messages to designated field personnel;
- Transmits messages by radio and follows up to ensure accurate receipt and understanding;
- Acts as a rodman or chainman in a survey party;
- Verifies building permit requests to assure that applicant is owner of property involved;
- Participates in inspections for compliance with zoning, sign and other similar ordinances;
- Prepares chemical analyses of sewage or water samples and performs routine chemical tests on such samples;
- Performs maintenance work on current land use maps;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- Elementary mathematics.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions in the English language.
- Learn to read maps and plot data on maps.
- Keep records and communicate orally and in the written English language.
- Works cooperatively with others.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Ability to read, write and understand the English language. Other combinations of experience and education which meet the minimum qualifications may be substituted.
