ARCHITECT
JOB CODE 23040
Effective Date: Rev. 12/07A DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The fundamental reason this classification exists is to apply professional architectural knowledge and skills to the design of City architectural projects and review of consultants' plans. Supervision is exercised over technicians and inspectors engaged in the design and construction of City buildings. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Architectural Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Checks shop drawings, interprets specifications and makes field inspections of City buildings being constructed or remodeled;
- Reviews plans prepared by consulting architects;
- Designs City architectural projects using architectural tools of the trade;
- Coordinates technical design work with the Planning Department, the Building Safety Division of the Development Services Department, and utility companies;
- Formulates standard specification language for architectural projects;
- Determines project scheduling and estimates labor and material costs from work plans;
- Verifies consulting architects' pay estimates and monthly claims for payment;
- Directs and reviews the work of technicians and inspectors engaged in the design and construction of City buildings;
- Presents the City's position and policies to private firms, other governmental jurisdictions and the general public on certain architectural matters;
- Administers consulting contracts for design and construction management of architectural projects by coordinating the work of the consultants and City staff;
- Administers construction contracts and monitors the progress of construction projects to ensure conformance to design specifications, cost estimates, and time schedules;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:Skill in:
- Principles and practices of architecture and architectural engineering.
- Modern methods, techniques and design concepts as applied to the design and construction of public buildings.
- Applicable titles of the State Statutes, County Health Regulations, and City Codes and Ordinances as they relate to the management of complex architectural projects.
- Principles and practices of supervision.
Ability to:
- Use of engineering and drafting instruments and related equipment.
- Communicate in the English language by phone or in person in a one-to-one or group setting.
- Draw building plans.
- Use graphic instructions, such as blueprints, schematic drawings, layouts, or other visual aids.
- Perform field inspections of buildings in various stages of completion.
- Comprehend and make inferences from materials written in the English language.
- Produce written documents in the English language with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
- Work cooperatively with City employees, private firms and the general public.
- Perform a broad range of supervisory responsibilities over others.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- For positions in the Development Services Department - By the end of the twelve-month probationary period, must be a Registered Professional Architect in the State of Arizona
AND
- Possess the following certification:
- ICC Building Plans Examiner
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Three years of experience in the practice of architecture and a bachelor's degree in architecture or architectural engineering. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
