FIRE PROTECTION ENGINEER
JOB CODE 23630
Effective Date: Rev. 12/07A DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The fundamental reason this classification exists is to review building plans and inspect existing structures to ensure conformance to fire protection codes and standards, and to assist in writing and updating fire protection codes. Incumbents analyze industrial, commercial, and public buildings and other structures before and after construction; evaluate the fire resistance of structures taking into consideration the usage and contents of buildings; evaluate the availability of water supplies and water delivery; and evaluate entrance/exit capabilities. Responsibilities include making recommendations for changes in design, materials, or equipment, such as structural components protection, fire protection equipment, alarm systems, and fire extinguishing devices and systems. Work involves considerable coordination with the Fire Department, Development Services Department, and other departments regarding the development and enforcement of fire protection codes. Some positions supervise clerical and professional-level employees, sworn and civilian, engaged in fire prevention duties. Work is accomplished with considerable independence within broad policy outlines, and is reviewed through evaluation of reports and conferences by a Lead Fire Protection Engineer, Deputy Fire Chief, Assistant Fire Chief, Fire Chief, assistant fire marshal, or fire marshal.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provides technical assistance to architects, contractors, Engineers, and other private industry professionals in interpreting and complying with fire codes and standards;
- Provides technical advice to architects, contractors, engineers, and other private industry professionals while conducting system plans review, monitoring code information, and conducting site inspections for new construction projects;
- Recommends changes in fire codes;
- Reviews construction site plans and building plans for compliance with fire protection codes and standards;
- Evaluates the fire resistance of buildings and structures;
- Determines whether water availability and water delivery systems are adequate to protect buildings;
- Evaluates the storage, handling, and usage of flammable and combustible materials, and hazardous materials for compliance with fire codes, standards, and other regulations;
- Evaluates process engineering drawings, specifications, reports, and other documentation for compliance with fire codes, standards, and regulations;
- Evaluates alternate means and methods for achieving code compliance; Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- Building construction, design, and materials as related to fire prevention and fire control.
- Fire codes and regulations.
- Fire detection, fire alarm, and fire suppression systems.
- Perform a broad range of supervisory responsibilities over others.
- Produce written documents with clearly organized thought using proper English sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
- Communicate orally with customers, clients, and the public in face-to-face one-on-one settings, in group settings, and using a telephone.
- Observe or monitor objects to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards.
- Keep current on City fire codes and ordinances.
- Comprehend or make inferences from written materials such as fire codes and ordinances.
- Use graphic instructions such as blueprints, layouts, or other visual aids.
- Move light objects (less than 20 pounds) short distances (20 feet or less).
- Enter data or information into a terminal, PC, or other keyboard device.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees and the public.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- For positions in the Development Services Department, must possess the following certifications by the end of probation:
- ICC Fire Plans Examiner
AND one of the following:
- NFPA Fire Protection Examiner
- NFPA Certified Fire Plans Specialist
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
One year of experience in fire protection engineering and a bachelor's degree in fire protection engineering or a related field. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
