AIRFIELD MAINTENANCE WORKER I
JOB CODE 24950
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform a variety of semiskilled tasks, progressing with experience to a skilled level, in the construction, maintenance and repair of the City airfield areas. Work requires a broad knowledge of construction, equipment, and, maintenance and repair techniques with individual assignments requiring use of skills in a variety of areas or specialized to one area. Oral instructions are received from, and work is subject to continuous review by an Aviation Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Performs radio control functions for coordinating various airfield repair tasks;
- Assists with asphalt construction and repair including the use of all related equipment and tools;
- Assists in construction and repair of concrete including the use of all related equipment and tools;
- Escorts non-authorized vehicles into restricted airfield areas;
- Operates the walk behind paint striper and other small paint striping and paint removal equipment;
- Operates a small mechanical and a hand-held herbicide applicator;
- Installs and repairs small signage;
- Installs traffic control devices in pedestrian, vehicle, and aircraft areas;
- Installs and repairs security fencing on airfield grounds;
- Operates mobile equipment such as trucks, rollers, and related equipment for
- airfield maintenance work;
- Installs safety curb blocks and pavement reflectors;
- Sets up barricades and other warning devices to channel traffic around maintenance areas or other hazards.
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

- Security fence installation and repair.
- Methods and practices used in the maintenance and/or expansion of airport facilities.
- Equipment, materials, and tools used in one or more of the construction trades.
- Bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time.
- Lift arm above shoulder level.
- Climb ladders or steps.
- Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation. This learning takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees and the public.
- Communicate orally in the English language with individuals in a face-to-face one-on-one setting, or by phone, or two way radio.
- Operate radio for airport communications.
- Set up or remove barricades for special maintenance events.
- Move objects weighing 50 pounds short and long distances.
- Work in a variety of weather and environmental conditions with exposure to the elements, dust, and extreme heat and cold temperatures.
- Work with cleaning fluid, chemicals, pesticides, insecticides, paints, cleaning agents or similar solutions using only normal protective equipment to maintain airfield grounds.
- Remain in a standing position for extended periods of time.
- Use and interpret graphic instructions, such as blueprints, schematic drawings, and penciled layouts to perform maintenance or special projects.
- Operate power driven machinery such as jack hammer, tamper, other similar sized equipment.
- Travel across rough, uneven or rocky surfaces.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- This classification requires the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work assignment, location or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
One year of experience in construction, maintenance and repair work. Other combinations of experience and education which meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
