PRODUCTION ASSISTANT

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to ensure the proper installation and operation of audio/visual and related technical systems used in support of convention, stage and meeting activities at the Phoenix Convention Center and Venues. Responsibilities include determining when the equipment and labor requirements exceed the available resources and coordinating additional support as needed. The incumbent exercises independent judgment and performs work under the general supervision of the Production Services Director.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Determines technical equipment and labor needs in support of convention, stage, and meeting activities at the Phoenix Convention Center and venues;
- Schedules equipment and labor to provide clients with optimum service level;
- Supervises additional contract labor in the operation of audio/visual and related technical systems during events;
- Removes or arranges for the removal of all technical equipment at the conclusion of each event;
- Keeps inventory of technical equipment to ensure client needs are met;
- Works with outside audio/visual contractors to ensure proper coordination of technical support services;
- Performs routine preventative maintenance on technical systems;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- Stage lighting and complex sound systems and operations as conducted in a large public assembly facility designed for multipurpose uses.
- Principles of acoustics and electro acoustics.
- Communicate in the English language by phone or in person in a one-to-one or group setting.
- Comprehend and make inferences from written material.
- Produce written documents in the English language with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
- Read and interpret drawings and layouts to determine operational needs and system operation.
- Observe, compare or monitor objects, data, or people's behavior to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards.
- Perceive the full range of the color spectrum, such as working with electrical wires.
- Draw or letter charts, schedules, setup plans, maps or similar objects.
- Use graphic instructions, such as blueprints, schematic drawings, layouts or other visual aids.
- Install temporary electrical and technical systems.
- Make fine, highly controlled muscular movements to adjust the position of a control mechanism, such as operating a joy stick or levers.
- Make skillful, controlled manipulations of small objects, such as assembling screws, washers, collar units and inserting them in a small hole.
- Coordinate the movement of more than one limb simultaneously.
- Lift arm above shoulder level, such as working with sound or lighting equipment.
- Work in small, cramped areas.
- Climb ladders or steps and work at heights greater than 10 feet, such as using a catwalk.
- Travel over rough or uneven surfaces.
- Move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) short distances (20 feet or less), and move objects 20-50 pounds long distances (more than 20 feet).
- Set up or remove technical equipment, tables, chairs or similar objects.
- Learn job-related material through oral instruction, observation, lecture, and reading, which takes place in an on-the-job or classroom setting.
- Enter data or information into a terminal, PC, or other keyboard device.
- Review or check the work products of others to ensure conformance to standards.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees and the general public.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to the incumbent or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require working irregular hours, evenings, and weekends.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Two years of experience in the installation and operation of sound systems, stage lighting, and related technical systems used in a large public assembly facility, or an associates degree in theater arts or related field. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
