CONVENTION CENTER WORKER

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this part-time classification exists is to perform routine manual tasks involving event support. Duties include setting up and taking down chairs, tables, riser seats and related equipment; janitorial work; and performing support work which may include completing forms and entering data into a computer. Primary responsibility is for the use of proper work methods, materials and equipment in cleaning, and otherwise attending to the neatness and sanitation of buildings, as well as for the proper handling and storage of equipment. Employees work under the close supervision of an Event Services Lead until procedures are learned, and some positions work independently as they gain experience.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes, and vacuums floors;
- Dusts and cleans offices;
- Washes windows, walls, and mirrors;
- Cleans, sanitizes, and deodorizes rest rooms and replenishes supplies;
- Moves and assists other workers in moving and setting up office and building furniture and equipment, including chairs, tables, riser seats, drapes, wall panels, or other equipment needed for event setups;
- Replaces light bulbs, cleans and polishes metal fixtures, and empties waste cans and ashtrays;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to:
- Learn job-related material, such as cleaning methods, materials and equipment operation, primarily through oral instruction and observation which takes place mainly in an on-the-job setting.
- Exercise care in the use of cleaning materials on different types of surfaces and in handling furniture or other equipment.
- Operate power driven machinery, such as scrubbers and sweepers.
- Communicate in the English language in person in a one-to-one setting.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Work with cleaning fluids or similar solutions wearing only normal protective equipment.
- Measure distance using a tape measure.
- Use graphic instructions such as layouts, setup plans, or other visual aids.
- Bend or stoop repeatedly over time.
- Lift arms above shoulder level when performing such tasks as dusting, washing windows, and replacing light bulbs.
- Clean areas using a broom, mop, or other appropriate tool.
- Move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) short distances (20 feet or less), and move light objects (less than 20 pounds) long distances.
- Set up and remove folding tables, chairs, risers, wall panels or similar objects.
- Wash walls, windows, mirrors, and other surfaces using such tools as a sponge, squeegee and appropriate cleaning solution.
- Observe or monitor objects or people's behavior to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Employees in this class work irregular hours, evenings and weekends on a part-time basis.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Must be willing and able to learn the functions of a Convention Center Worker. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
