PRODUCTION SERVICES MANAGER

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to direct the operation, maintenance, design, modification, and fabrication of all sound, lighting, mechanical rigging, and related technical systems used in support of stage productions, conventions, exhibits, and related events occurring in Phoenix Convention Center Department facilities. Supervision is exercised over the Assistant Production Services Manager, Production Coordinators and Production Assistants. The incumbent receives general direction and policy decisions from a Deputy Convention Center Director, but is granted wide latitude for independent judgment and discretion. Work is evaluated on the basis of results obtained.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Meets with clients and provides necessary consultation to clarify needs and determine technical equipment, support personnel, and timetables necessary to stage events;
- Schedules support staff and oversees technical preparations for staged events in accordance with the Convention Center master schedule;
- Coordinates activities of touring productions with the Convention Center master schedule and ensures that the technical requirements of stage and exhibit managers are met;
- Supervises the operation of all technical systems and house equipment including computerized lighting systems, sound systems, mechanical rigging, symphony shell, motorized equipment, and related controls;
- Oversees day-to-day equipment maintenance, and schedules and supervises all major system and component maintenance and fabrication;
- Designs and engineers all major system modifications and new systems for facility improvement and economy;
- Develops and writes technical specifications for long-range system modifications and purchases and makes recommendations for award of bids;
- Schedules and arranges for supplemental equipment and contracted labor as approved;
- Participates in preparation of the annual operating budget by specifying supplies and equipment to be purchased and estimating costs;
- Oversees the maintenance of complete inventory relating to staging and production;
- Supervises staff in the performance of their duties;
- Writes technical and administrative reports for management review;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- Procedures and techniques related to the design, maintenance, and operation of computerized stage lighting, electronic sound systems, and mechanical and motorized rigging.

- Modify and design equipment and systems to meet event requirements.
- Interpret and sketch electronic diagrams and schematics.
- Communicate in the English language by phone or in person in a one-to-one or group setting.
- Observe or monitor objects, data, and people's behavior to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards.
- Estimate labor or material costs from work plans.
- Produce written documents in the English language with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
- Comprehend and make inferences from written material.
- Make fine, highly controlled muscular movements to adjust the position of a control mechanism, such as operating controls for light and sound equipment.
- Use common hand tools, such as screw driver, pliers, hammer, or similar equipment.
- Use a catwalk in the performance of duties.
- Review or check the work products of others to ensure conformance to standards.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees and the general public.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require working irregular hours, evenings, and weekends.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Five years of experience in all facets of technical theater and theatrical management, including experience supervising technical and supervisory personnel, plus a bachelor's degree in technical theater, theatrical management, or a related field supplemented by advanced technical courses in electronics or communications engineering. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
