The fundamental reason this classification exists is to supervise event management activities for scheduled events at the Phoenix Convention Center Department. The Event Operations Manager oversees and directs the activities of employees engaged in providing event coordination, technical support, audio-visual services, security, fire regulation compliance, exhibitor services, and overall client satisfaction during events. The incumbent coordinates activities with other divisions/sections and supervises event support staff. The Event Operations Manager works under the supervision of a Deputy Convention Center Director.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Directs and coordinates staff activities necessary to support various events and activities;
- Prepares the annual budget, recommends capital improvement, controls and monitors section's expenditures;
- Consults with exhibit managers, promoters, convention representatives, and others concerning physical set-up needs and requirements for assigned areas;
- Inspects facilities to ensure they are being maintained properly for events;
- Monitors concessions and service contractor operations in the facilities for contract compliance;
- Oversees the computing of costs for billing of special services and equipment rental charges;
- Works closely with the public attending events by answering complaints and monitoring services provided;
- Prepares a variety of reports on security, staffing utilization, event-related crowd control, and risk management issues;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- Equipment and personnel requirements in presenting public entertainments, attractions, and conventions.
- Business practices as they pertain to billing and contractual arrangements for tenants of theatrical or public assembly facility.
- Management and operational procedures of convention/cultural center and public assembly facilities.
- Laws and regulations relating to public safety.
- Perform a broad range of supervisory responsibilities over others.
- Analyze policies and procedures for timeliness and effectiveness.
- Interpret and enforce fire and safety codes.
- Communicate orally, in the English language, with individuals in a face-to-face, one-on-one or group setting, or by telephone.
- Produce documents written in the English language with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
- Establish cooperative working relationships with employees, lessees, municipal officials, service contractors, and the public.
- Serve and control large numbers of people effectively and solve problems common to public assembly.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. These individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license, and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Five years of experience in organizing, supervising, and coordinating personnel, facilities, and equipment for a large theater, convention center, or public assembly facility, and a bachelor's degree in business administration, public relations, communications, or a related field. Other combinations of education and experience that meet the minimum qualifications may be substituted.
