DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to reinforce, repair, and mend books, pamphlets, and other library materials in the Central Library, and operate the automated bindery machine. Work involves routine manipulative tasks, but an employee is expected to use some judgment in the restorations and repair of materials. Supervision is received from the Library Support Services Supervisor and work is reviewed upon completion for adherence to established standards of quality.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Mends books by repairing tears and hinges, recasing, signature repairing, tipping in loose leaves, cleaning, patching pages, making pockets, and repairing spiral binders;
- Refers books not considered repairable or requiring extensive repairs to a supervisor for possible discarding or rebinding;
- Keeps statistical records of number of books mended;
- Binds new pamphlets;
- Trains employees and volunteers on proper methods of mending books;
- Keeps an inventory of mending supplies;
- Assemble volumes of periodicals and books for bindery, operate computerized bindery module and box/unbox items for bindery;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to:
- Learn about materials, methods and techniques used in book mending and repairing primarily through oral instruction in an on-the-job setting.
- Communicate in the English language by phone or in person in a one-to-one setting.
- Understand and follow written and oral directions.
- Determine the feasibility of repairs to books.
- Make continuous or repetitive arm-hand movements.
- Move light objects (less than 20 pounds) short distances (20 feet or less).
- Work with cleaning fluids or similar solutions using only normal protective equipment.
- Remain in a sitting position for extended periods of time.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
- Learn and operate a microcomputer.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
One year of general clerical experience. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
