ASSISTANT CITY LIBRARIAN

The fundamental reason that this classification exists is to oversee branch library operations and all system wide public service related functions. The Assistant City Librarian administers and manages all aspects of public service, including collection development, coordination of children and teen services, grants and staff development and branch library operations. Work is performed under the general direction of the City Librarian.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supervises professional, paraprofessional administrative and clerical staff;
- Directs and coordinates implementation of public service policies and programs throughout the Library System;
- Develops strategic plans for the library service;
- Evaluates and adjusts diverse library programs and services to meet the rapidly evolving needs of the community;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- The principles and practices of library administration.
- Current technological advances in the library field.
- Community needs and interest in library services and methods for determining and meeting such needs.
- The principles and practices of supervision and budget administration.
- Analyze library needs and evaluate library services.
- Produce written documents in the English language with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammer.
- Comprehend and make inferences from written material.
- Review or check the work products of others to ensure conformance to standards.
- Analyze professional problems and take appropriate actions.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees and the general public.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Four years in the administration and direction of a multi-agency public library system, or major library division, including authority for personnel and budget administration, and a master's degree in library science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution. Other combinations of education and experience which meet the minimum qualifications may be substituted.
