PARKS MAINTENANCE MECHANIC
JOB CODE 40160
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform skilled tasks in the repair and maintenance of mechanical park and plumbing equipment. Some positions require the operation of machinery. Assignments are received in the form of oral and written orders which are at times accompanied by sketches and diagrams. Employees act on their own initiative to eliminate defects when mechanical deficiencies are discovered. Work is performed under the supervision of a Parks Specialized Maintenance Foreman or Parks Maintenance Supervisor who inspects work while in progress and upon completion.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Repairs and rebuilds water sprinklers, valves, garden hose couplings, ditchers and pumps, and comparable equipment;
- Operates and repairs low voltage electrical components used in complex automatic sprinkler systems;
- Installs, maintains and repairs plumbing systems such as golf course sprinkler systems, sewer lines, water mains, hot water boilers, drinking water purification systems, swimming pool filter systems, chlorine gas equipment, and mechanical chemical feeding systems;
- Performs minor troubleshooting and repair on electrical components such as pumps and sprinkler control units up to 115V;
- Operates power driven equipment such as a lawn mower, vacuum sweeper, buffer, backhoe, trencher, or other similarly sized equipment;
- Works with cleaning fluids, chemicals, paints, cleaning agents or similar solutions using only normal protective equipment;
- Operates, programs and maintains computerized irrigation systems;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- Methods, practices, tools and materials used in plumbing maintenance and repair work.
- Occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to plumbing and mechanical maintenance and repair work.
- Basic computer operations.
- Remain in a standing position for extended periods of time.
- Measure distances using calibrated instruments.
- Use graphic instructions, such as blueprints, schematic drawings, layouts, or other visual aids.
- Make precise arm-hand positioning movements and maintain static arm-hand position (i.e., operating a drill).
- Make continuous or repetitive arm-hand movements.
- Make fine, highly controlled muscular movements to adjust the position of a control mechanism (i.e., operating a lever or pedal).
- Make skillful, controlled manipulations of small objects.
- Coordinate the movement of more than one limb simultaneously (i.e., operating a clutch or accelerator).
- Bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time.
- Lift arm above shoulder level.
- Work in small, cramped areas.
- Walk over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces.
- Move objects 50 pounds or greater short distances (20 feet or less).
- Use common hand and power tools, such as a hammer, saw, screwdriver or similar tool.
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
- Learn job-related material through oral instruction and observation.
- Learning takes place primarily on the job.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Work cooperatively with others.
- Work safely without presenting a threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment or shift.
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, posssess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
One year of skilled level experience with computerized irrigation systems and plumbing or mechanical maintenance and repair work, and completion of the appropriate apprenticeship training program. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
