AQUATICS MAINTENANCE COORDINATOR

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to coordinate the activities of private contractors and City staff in performing skilled maintenance, renovation, construction, and safety inspection work on the City's public pools and equipment. This classification serves as a liaison and central point of contact between aquatics maintenance crews, aquatics recreation staff, other departments, and private contractors. While the classification works closely with others in coordinating projects, facilitating communication, and providing technical guidance, it does not have direct supervisory responsibilities. Work is performed independently under the general supervision of the Parks Special Maintenance Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Coordinates the maintenance, renovation, construction, and inspection of City swimming pools;
- Works closely with staff from Parks and Recreation and other departments/entities, including Electrical Maintenance, Materials Management, Personnel-Safety, Fire and Engineering Departments, private companies, and the county;
- Establishes and coordinates an annual preventative maintenance program for the City's pool facilities;
- Provides initial response to calls for service from pool staff, assesses maintenance needs, and takes corrective action or routes a work order to appropriate maintenance team;
- Prepares technical specifications for equipment or renovation work and bid specifications for construction and repair work done by outside contractors;
- Serves as a technical advisor on the County Health Department Regulations and requirements for public pools;
- Reviews and interprets construction drawings, blueprints, plans and specifications;
- Participates in the development of the operating and capital improvement budgets and estimates material and labor cost figures for pool operation, construction and maintenance;
- Maintains work and activity records and prepares written reports to management;
- Maintains pool plans, technical specifications, and other maintenance or construction history on all pools;
- Serves as liaison between pool maintenance and pool recreation aquatic staff;
- Orders supplies, conducts inventories, and maintains purchase records;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:Ability to:
- Operation, repair and maintenance of swimming pools, equipment, and facilities.
- Methods, tools, materials and practices used in the construction and renovation of large commercial or public pools.
- Construction estimating practices and current labor and material costs.
- Hazards and safety precautions applicable to pool maintenance.
- Chemical water treatment systems and pool water testing.
- Determine materials and labor required for projects and prepare cost estimates;
- Work with chemicals or similar or solutions such as liquid chlorine, muriatic acid, and soda ash using personal protective equipment.
- Draw, sketch or letter charts, schedules, graphs, maps, or similar objects.
- Read and use graphic instructions, such as blueprints, schematic drawings, layouts or other visual aids.
- Perceive the full range of the color spectrum, such as when working with electrical wires or water testing color comparators.
- Communicate in the English language with co-workers, customers, or the general public using a radio, telephone or in a face-to-face, one-to-one or group setting.
- Produce written documents in the English language with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
- Work cooperatively with others and act as a liaison between contractors, customers, and the City.
- Operate a computer and application software for maintenance and project management programs.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
- Climb ladders or steps, such as getting on roofs and into sump pits.
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to outdoor elements.
- Move objects weighing 50 pounds or more long distances (more than 20 feet).
- Operate power driven construction tools and equipment.
Additional Requirements:
- Must possess a Pool/Spa Operator certification through the National Swimming Pool Foundation or an Aquatics Facility Operator certification through the National Recreation and Parks Association by the end of the probationary period.
- This classification requires the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- The performance of other essential or marginal functions will depend upon work assignment, location, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Four years of experience in the construction, maintenance or operation of large commercial or public pools. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
