PARKS EQUIPMENT MECHANIC

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to repair and rebuild mowers and other related parks and golf equipment. In addition to performing repairs and preventative maintenance, rebuilding component parts is required. Parks Equipment Mechanics run a decentralized shop typically under the general supervision of a Parks Foreman II or Golf Course Supervisor. The incumbents exercise independent judgment in determining the priorities for repair, method of repair and parts required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Inspects, repairs and rebuilds a variety of mowing equipment;
• Sharpens blades on both reel and rotary mowers;
• Repairs, adjusts and rebuilds two and four cycle gasoline engines, diesel engines, air compressors, portable water pumps, and other similar mechanical equipment;
• Performs gas and arc welding;
• Makes fine adjustments on mowing equipment;
• Adjusts and repairs clutches, hydrostatic and manual transmissions, and drive trains on large mowers, tractors and other parks equipment;
• Repairs, troubleshoots and replaces hydraulic systems and electrical components;
• Cleans equipment using appropriate materials;
• Reads operator manuals, parts books, and repair manuals;
• Orders parts and supplies, keeps records on purchases and inventory, and completes basic forms and reports.
• Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

• Methods, materials, tools and standard practices of the small engine mechanic's trade.
• Principles of operation of internal combustion engines.
• Hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
• Small engine electrical systems.
• Basic gas and arc welding.
• Use and care of tools employed in all phases of parks equipment repair and maintenance.

Ability To:

• Observe or monitor objects to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards.
• Use mechanical equipment, such as grinders, drill presses, and welding equipment.
• Use hand tools, such as wrenches, screw drivers, pliers, gauges, or similar tools.
• Work under hazardous conditions where physical danger exists due to mechanical equipment.
• Bend or stoop repeatedly or continually, such as performing inspections and repairs.
• Move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) long distances (more than 20 feet).
• Coordinate the movement of more than one limb simultaneously.
• Make skillful, controlled manipulations of small objects.
• Perceive the full range of the color spectrum, such as working with electrical wires.
• Mix and work with oil, fuel, grease, industrial cleaners and other similar solutions using only normal protective equipment.
• Use graphic instructions such as schematics, layouts or other visual aids.
• Comprehend and make inferences from written materials such as technical manuals.
• Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
• Complete forms or operate a computer to record or report information in a standard format.
• Work cooperatively with others.
• Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.

Additional Requirements:

• Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment or shift.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Two years of journey level experience as an engine mechanic including experience in the repair and rebuilding of mowers and other parks or golf maintenance equipment. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
