PARKS SPECIAL MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR
JOB CODE 40220
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to supervise skilled trades work in Citywide specialized maintenance activities and aquatics facility management. The Parks Special Maintenance Supervisor directs the work of 50 or more Parks Maintenance Mechanics, Building Maintenance Workers, Parks Foremen, Equipment Operators, Trades Helpers, and Welders in the completion of service requests for major and emergency carpentry, plumbing, painting, welding, equipment maintenance, and heavy equipment operation projects. The Parks Special Maintenance Supervisor works with considerable independence in accomplishing assigned duties, under the general direction of the Parks Special Operations Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Oversees yards and ensures compliance with various regulated environmental, health, and safety programs; schedules training; and maintains training records;
- Supervises the work of crews engaged in construction, fabrication, and maintenance of park property and equipment, such as concrete and asphalt slabs and walkways, picnic tables and benches, trash containers, fireplaces, diving towers, lifeguard chairs, signs, umbrellas, flagpoles, and other similar equipment;
- Estimates labor or materials costs for prospective jobs using blueprints or work plans;
- Collects, compiles, and interprets unit production and cost statistics for budget purposes;
- Prioritizes service requests requiring journey level trades personnel from district operations;
- Maintains records and prepares reports, job cost estimates and preliminary budget estimates;
- Recommends improvements and proper materials and methods for carrying out such improvements;
- Coordinates with outside vendors and other City departments;
- Develops and implements preventive maintenance schedules for aquatic facilities;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- Principles and practices of supervision and personnel practices.
- Methods and materials applicable to parks maintenance and repair work.
- Practices and methods of developing and maintaining athletic fields and parks.
- Maintenance and operation of parks equipment.
- Hazards and safety precautions applicable to equipment operation or methods used in service and maintenance activities.
- Communicate in the English language by phone or in person in a one-to-one or group setting.
- Comprehend and make inferences from written material.
- Travel across rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces.
- Produce written documents with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
- Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation. This learning takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting.
- Work cooperatively with the general public and other City employees.
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
- Use computer applications and keyboard in the course of accomplishing assigned duties.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential or marginal functions depending upon work assignment, location, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Three years of supervisory experience in the maintenance area, including project management skills, journey-level skill in at least one building trade, and reasonable facility in other trades. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
