GOLF COURSE SUPERVISOR

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to ensure the proper care and maintenance of a municipal golf course, including the computerized irrigation system and the pumps for high pressure sprinkling. Supervision is exercised over Golf Rangers, Greenskeepers, and other employees who perform golf course maintenance duties. Work is performed with considerable independence, and policy questions are discussed with the Golf/Tennis Administrative Supervisor who reviews the work through inspection and discussion. The reaction and comments from the public using the golf course facilities serve as an evaluation of how well the golf course is maintained.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Plans, assigns, and supervises work of subordinates in the care, maintenance, and operation of a municipal golf course;
• Supervises the mowing, watering, weeding, rolling, spiking, and fertilization of greens, tees, and fairways;
• Supervises the propagation of grass and other plants;
• Suggests methods for and supervises the control of fungus, weeds, and rodents;
• Directs the use of fungicides, pesticides and insecticides for control of disease and insects that are harmful to grass and other plants;
• Reviews, develops plans, and participates in the construction and development of greens, tees and fairways;
• Estimates and requisitions materials, supplies, and equipment needed in the maintenance and operation of the golf course and related facilities;
• Analyzes soil conditions and devises formulas to correct unhealthy conditions;
• Performs various administrative tasks, such as keeping records, producing written reports, and preparing and controlling a budget;
• Operates power driven machinery such as a lawn mower;
• Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

• Computerized irrigation systems.
• Methods used in the care and maintenance of golf courses and greens.
• Turf diseases and the chemicals and methods used to control them.
• Laws and record keeping requirements regarding the use of pesticides and irrigation water.
• Uses and operating methods of equipment and tools used in golf course maintenance.
• Principles and practices of supervision.
• Leadership styles and skills.
• Golf rules and methods of play.

Ability to:

• Obtain pesticide certification.
• Work cooperatively with other City employees and the public.
• Communicate in the English language with employees or the public by phone or in person in a one-to-one or group setting.
• Observe or monitor facilities, equipment and people's behavior to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards.
• Comprehend and make inferences from written material.
• Produce written documents with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation and grammar.
• Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
• Learn job-related material through oral instruction, observation, and reading which takes place in an on-the-job or classroom setting.
• Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.

Additional Requirements:

• Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
• Some positions will require the performance of other essential functions.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Three years of supervisory experience in the maintenance of a golf course, supplemented by courses in turf management, agronomy, agriculture, or a related field. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
