LIFEGUARD
(Part-Time)JOB CODE 41010
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
Effective Date: 12/92X
The fundamental reason this classification exists is to provide supervision and instruction of various age groups in swimming and diving activities and for the safety of patrons in the swimming area. Supervision is received from the Assistant Pool Manager or Pool Manager.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Teaches beginning and advanced classes in lifesaving, swimming and diving;
- Determines eligibility for and conducts competitive swimming;
- Enforces pool rules and regulations for the safety and convenience of the public;
- Performs rescue and administers artificial respiration, CPR, and first aid;
- Checks the proper maintenance of the equipment and sanitation of pools and bathhouse facilities;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:Skill in:
- Principles and methods used in teaching of swimming.
- Lifesaving methods and procedures, including first aid and standard resuscitation measures.
- Rules and regulations governing conduct of public at pools.
- Swimming pool sanitary and chlorination systems.
Ability to:
- The application of lifesaving techniques.
- Swimming.
- Communicate orally in the English language in a one-on-one or group setting.
- React quickly and calmly in emergencies.
- Lift arms above shoulder level.
- Administer first aid and CPR.
- Perform rescue actions.
- Move objects in excess of 50 pounds long distances (greater than 20 feet).
- Firmly but tactfully enforce rules and regulations.
- Work cooperatively with other City staff and the public.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work locations, assignment, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Completion of 10th Grade and possession of Advanced Lifesaving or Water Safety Instructor's Certificate. Other combinations of experience and education which meets the minimum qualifications may be substituted.
