ARTS SPECIALIST

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to coordinate programs in the arts such as the Arts in Education or Percent for Arts Program. For the Arts in Education program, staff is responsible for working with teachers and administrators in creating a greater awareness as to how the arts can be integrated into the public school system and how to obtain funding to accomplish this purpose. Staff involved in managing the Percent for Arts program oversee projects in which a percentage of construction dollars are used to create or acquire public art for the project. Direction is provided by a Senior Arts Specialist and the Arts and Culture Administrator. Performance is based upon results achieved.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Conceptualizes arts-in-education programs;
- Supports curriculum development in the arts in public schools;
- Acts as a liaison to district-level curriculum directors;
- Assists teachers, parent-teacher groups, and school board members in drafting and critiquing grant requests and in monitoring grants program compliance;
- Reports outcomes of activities for which grant funding was provided;
- Initiates and coordinates collaborations with colleges, arts and community organizations, and schools to produce specialized service and training programs such as the Artist/Teacher Institute;
- Manages projects for the Percent for Arts program;
- Drafts grants to agencies such as the National Endowment for the Arts and Arizona Arts Commission;
- Conducts public art workshops;
- Coordinates artist selections;
- Writes, negotiates, and monitors contracts;
- Serves as a liaison between artists, departments, designers, and community groups;
- Prepares project budgets, plans, and reports;
- Conducts extensive community outreach efforts;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- Develop and implement educational programming for children.
- Work cooperatively with artists, teachers, parents, school administrators, board members, museum educators, City staff, other government agencies, and the general public.
- Obtain grant funding to support art projects.
- Produce written documents in the English language using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
- Communicate orally in the English language by phone or in a one-to-one or group setting.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions require the use of a personal or City vehicle on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license, and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Three years of experience in arts, education, or design including experience in administering or managing arts projects or programs and a bachelor's degree in visual arts, education, architectural design or a related field. Other combinations of education and experience which meet the minimum qualifications may be substituted.
