WATER METER TECHNICIAN I

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform various routine and repetitive tasks in cleaning, repairing, testing and adjusting a variety of small residential water meters. Work is performed both in the shop and in the field under the close supervision of a Water Meter Shop Supervisor until repair processes are learned, after which time the Supervisor is consulted on a less frequent basis when unusual problems are encountered. After repairs are completed, meters are generally tested to meet American Water Works Association specifications to ensure their being in good mechanical condition.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Takes apart residential water meters and cleans, repairs or replaces worn and defective parts, makes adjustments and reassembles the meters;
- Tests meters for leaks and for accuracy of flow readings;
- Operates sandblasting equipment used in cleaning the exterior of the water meters;
- Keeps records of repairs made to water meters;
- Salvages usable parts of worn-out meters and stores such parts for future use;
- Runs errands to the stock room to get supplies for meter repair work and advises supervisor when the inventory reaches a replenishment level;
- Cleans shop area;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:Skill in:
- The methods, materials, and techniques required in repairing small water meters and mechanical devices.
Ability to:
- The use and care of small hand tools such as hammers, saws, wrenches, screw drivers, or similar tools.
- Understand and follow written and oral instructions in the English language.
- Communicate orally with customers, clients or the public in a face-to-face one-to-one setting.
- Make skillful, controlled manipulations of small objects.
- Bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time to work on water meters at a workbench.
- Move heavy objects such as water meters weighing 50 pounds or more short distances (20 feet or less).
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
- Work with cleaning fluids, paints, chemicals, cleaning agents or similar solutions using only normal protective equipment.
- Observe or monitor machinery and equipment to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
- Clean work areas using a broom, mop or other appropriate tool.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
One year of experience in the repair of small machines and mechanical devices. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
