WATER METER TECHNICIAN II

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform various tasks in cleaning, repairing, testing, and adjusting a variety of large complex component water meters used for industrial services. The complexity of the larger meters is the major work element that distinguishes the Water Meter Technician II classification from the Water Meter Technician I. Work is performed both in the shop and in the field under the general supervision of a Water Meter Shop Supervisor. After repairs are completed, meters are generally tested to meet American Water Works Association specifications to ensure their being in good mechanical condition.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Takes apart single and dual chamber commercial water meters and cleans, repairs or replaces worn and defective parts, makes adjustments and reassembles the water meters;
- Tests meters at industrial sites for leaks and accuracy of flow;
- Performs field repairs using a mobile repair shop;
- Salvages usable parts of worn meters and stores such parts for future use;
- Contacts engineering representatives of industrial firms to arrange for water turnoffs;
- Keeps records of repairs made to water meters;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:Skill in:
- The methods, materials, and techniques required in repairing small commercial water meters.
Ability to:
- The care and use of small hand tools such as hammers, saws, wrenches, screw drivers, or similar tools.
- Understand and follow written and oral instructions in the English language.
- Communicate orally with customers, clients or the public in a face-to-face one-to-one setting.
- Observe or monitor objects such as water meters to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards.
- Perform physical inventories.
- Work in small, cramped areas.
- Climb ladders to get into or out of vaults containing water meters.
- Move heavy objects such as water meters weighing 50 pounds or more short distances (20 feet or less).
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
- Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation. This learning takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting.
- Review or check the work of Water Meter Technicians I to ensure conformance to standards.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Two years of experience repairing residential and industrial water meters or other mechanical devices. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
