Job Description

HEAVY DUTY MAINTENANCE MECHANIC

JOB CODE 50430

Effective Date: 06/95A

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to install, repair, and maintain heavy-duty equipment at a water or wastewater treatment plant, pumping station, deep well site or booster station. Work may require the operation of machinery but emphasis is upon servicing, installing, repairing, and maintaining equipment rather than its operation. Work assignments are varied and employees must be skilled in several mechanical trades including fabrication and millwright. Some Heavy Duty Maintenance Mechanics act as lead workers, supervising the work of Equipment Operators and Maintenance Mechanics I and II, or other employees who may be assigned to assist the Heavy Duty Maintenance Mechanic. This classification is distinguished from Maintenance Mechanic II positions by the complexity, close tolerance, size, and difficulty of the equipment maintained, by the added lead responsibilities, and by a greater responsibility for diagnosing equipment problems and determining needed repairs. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Well Field Supervisor I, Electrical Maintenance Supervisor, or Chief Wastewater Mechanic who reviews work while in progress or upon completion.
