SEWER SERVICE WORKER

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to assist in the maintenance, repair and inspection of the wastewater collection system's gravity mains, force mains, manholes, pumps and metering stations. Prior completion of the Sewer Service Worker Trainee Program differentiates this class from the Sewer Service Worker Trainee. Work is performed with direction from a Sewer Service Crew Leader, under the general supervision of a Sewer Service Foreman.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Operates various wastewater collection system equipment such as T.V. equipment, backhoes, hydros, rodders, bucket machines, vacuum trucks, and dusting machines;
- Inspects sewer lines, dusts manholes and conducts T.V. inspections;
- Places sheeting to shore trenches, cuts pipe and performs other tasks related to sewer main repair, replacement and extension;
- Repairs and constructs manholes;
- Lays brick;
- Operates power driven machinery such as jack hammers, tampers and other similar equipment;
- Moves debris, dirt or other material from one place to another;
- Removes and replaces manhole covers;
- Sets up barricades and traffic cones.
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:Skill in:
- Hazards inherent to sewer maintenance work and safety measures to be observed including confined space entry procedures and trench safety regulations.
- Equipment and machinery mechanics.
Ability to:
- Use and care of tools and equipment.
- Methods and techniques of sewer repair, maintenance and installation.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees.
- Work with raw sewage and chemical in the collection system using only normal protective equipment.
- Work in small, cramped spaces.
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
- Understand and follow oral instructions in the English language.
- Measure distances using a tape measure or other measuring device.
- Read, comprehend and interpret written material in the English language such as operation manuals and Material Safety Data Sheets.
- Move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) short distances (20 feet or less).
- Set up or remove barricades, traffic cones or similar objects.
- Travel across rough, uneven or rocky surfaces.
- Coordinate the movement of more than one limb simultaneously.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
- Climb ladders to enter or exit manholes or trenches.
