ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS ASSISTANT

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to advise and ensure the Environmental Programs Manager (EPM) is kept fully informed on technical and administrative aspects of specific environmental programs. The incumbent assists the EPM in coordinating technical administrative and regulatory activities between City departments, Mayor and Council, and the various environmental committees, commissions and groups. Responsibilities include collecting and coordinating data, monitoring environmental studies and programs, staffing the Environmental Quality Commission and its subcommittee, providing technical and administrative assistance to the Futures Forum Environment/ Natural Resource action group, responding to environmental inquiries from other departments, Mayor and Council, citizens, and the media, and assisting in environmental outreach programs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Briefs the EPM on environmental concerns and secures and evaluates information for proper action;
- Collects, compiles, reviews, summarizes, and presents environmental information and data;
- Provides technical assistance to the Environmental Quality Commission, Futures Forum Environmental Action Group, and other committees and group as needed;
- Monitors specified environmental tasks and programs;
- Provides environmental information to the public, media, Mayor and Council, other City departments;
- Assists in developing City positions on environmental policies and regulations;
- Prepares annual budget;
- Makes oral presentations to community groups and City management;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

- Environmental issues, programs, regulations and policies which impact the City.
- Relationship of City operations to environmental impacts.
- Report writing and presentations.
- Principals and practices of municipal budgeting.
- Work cooperatively with others.
- Produce written documents in the English language with clearly- organized thoughts with proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
- Coordinate, manage a variety of technical, regulatory and administrative activities with various City departments.
- Make sound judgments based on analysis.
- Monitor and expedite ongoing and planned environmental programs.
- Manage time resources and multiple priorities in a manner so as to produce acceptable quality work products.
- Communicate orally in the English language with customers, clients, and the public using a telephone or in a one-to-one or group setting.
- Enter data or information into a terminal, PC, or other keyboard device.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential or marginal functions.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
A bachelor's degree in environmental science, environment planning, environmental communication, or a related field. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
