FIREFIGHTER TRAINEE

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform delivery, general maintenance, and custodial work in the upkeep of Fire Department facilities and equipment. This classification is responsible for performing duties in accordance with established departmental rules and regulations under close supervision. Work methods and results are under constant review by technicians and supervisory officers through observation, review, and discussions. Successful performance as a Firefighter Trainee may lead to an appointment as a Firefighter.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Makes interdepartmental deliveries of mail, medical emergency supplies, and other related supplies and equipment;
- Performs messenger tasks picking up and delivering a variety of items;
- Picks up Fire Department EMS equipment, cleans and returns to assigned location;
- Disposes of infectious waste and contaminated emergency medical supplies;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

- The City of Phoenix street system to locate addresses.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions in the English language.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees and the public.
- Move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) long distances (20 feet or more).
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the outdoor elements.
- Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation to effectively perform job duties. This learning takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting.
- Enter data or information into a terminal, PC or other keyboard device to update the Fire Department data base.
- Work with infectious waste, cleaning fluids, chemicals, cleaning agents or similar solutions using only normal protective equipment.
- Communicate orally with customers, clients, or the public in face-to-face one-on-one settings, or in group settings.
- Sort, separate, arrange, file or distribute in-coming mail, products, or material in a prescribed manner.
- Coordinate the movement of more than one limb simultaneously.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment or shift.
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Ability to read and comprehend material at a level appropriate to this class.
