FIRE CAPTAIN
ASSIGN: INVESTIGATOR, 44 HOURS

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE ASSIGNMENT:

Positions in this assignment are assigned to the Fire Investigations Section of the Fire Department. Incumbents conduct on-scene fire investigations to determine the origin and cause of fires, and are responsible for developing an awareness of the reasons and motives leading to arson. Investigations are used to determine if the fire cause is criminal or not. If arson is found, a follow-up investigation is conducted to support prosecution. Incumbents use specialized skills to understand fire, and its chemistry and effects on various types of building construction. Incumbents carry firearms and wear ballistic vests as needed. The fire investigations work of the Fire Captain, Assign: Investigator requires a modified 44-hour workweek.

Duties include investigating fires to determine origin and cause; preparing fire loss analysis reports; developing fire loss intervention strategies; writing reports of investigated fires; arresting fire crime suspects; interviewing and interrogating individuals associated with fire and arson cases; diagramming crime scenes; preparing and serving search warrants; recommending measures to eliminate fire hazards; photographing fires that are investigated; conducting surveillances; locating and pursuing suspects in fire-related crimes; providing technical assistance to fire company officers; directing and coordinating investigations of fire-related crimes; working with attorneys and law-related enforcement agencies for prosecution in fire-related crimes; working with attorneys or their designees in civil-related fires; collecting, preserving, and controlling evidence identified at fires; and maintaining proficiencies in firearms-officer safety procedures and criminal law.

The essential function of conducting fire investigations and the additional requirement of being a Certified Arizona Peace Officer differentiates this assignment from the base classification.
