FIRE PERFORMANCE AUDITOR

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to conduct comprehensive procedural and operational audits of Fire Department programs, procedures, and activities by applying appropriate audit procedures. Incumbents examine confidential records, operational goals, objectives and procedures to determine the adequacy of internal controls, compliance with applicable laws and regulations, efficiency and economy of operations and effectiveness in achieving results. In addition, incumbents are responsible for performing investigations as requested, writing audit reports, making recommendations to correct unsatisfactory conditions, and maintaining confidential investigative files. Performance Auditors work under the direction of the Fire Chief.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Interviews complainants and employees to elicit the facts about an incident;
- Documents information received from employees and complainants;
- Writes reports of investigations and comprehensive quarterly reports for submittal to the Fire Chief;
- Maintains custody of all internal investigative files;
- Files documentation and written reports;
- Confers with the Fire Chief on internal security matters;
- Performs audits of internal programs to ensure compliance with procedures;
- Researches complaints using accepted techniques of administrative investigation;
- Reviews Police Department reports and files in the investigation of complaints;
- Determines violations of Department policies and procedures, laws, and regulations;
- Performs applicant background checks and employment verfications;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- Applicable state, federal, and local statutes.
- Communicate orally with employees, complainants, and the public in face-to-face one-on-one settings, in group settings, or using a telephone.
- Comprehend and make inferences from written material.
- Produce written documents with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
- Use judgment to determine the veracity of information received.
- Plan and organize own workload.
- Determine appropriate investigative techniques to use.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees and the public.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Must be eligible for Peace Officer status.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment or shift.
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Five years of criminal and/or administrative investigation experience including report writing, and an associate's degree or equivalent. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
