ASSISTANT TO THE FIRE CHIEF

The Assistant to the Fire Chief on assignment in Planning and Research is responsible for working with all divisions of the Fire Department and providing professional and technical support in the areas of planning and research and fire protection engineering. The employee in this class works extensively with other City, State and Federal agencies, and with the private sector, in providing input and coordination on various aspects of public protection. Related responsibilities include coordinating planning and development projects for the entire Department; developing incident command procedures and response plans; designing command vehicles and systems; and testing and evaluating new fire suppression equipment. The incumbent in this assignment manages the Research and Planning Section, the Geographic Information System Section and the Computer Services Section. This assignment is distinguished from the base class by the increased involvement in highly complex and technical issues.
Appointment to this assignment requires five years experience in public fire protection, including two years of supervisory experience and a bachelor's degree in fire protection engineering, public administration, or a related field. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
