CHIEF VIDEO ENGINEER

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to plan, design, set specifications, and oversee construction and operation of all engineering facilities for the Video Production Unit of the City's cable and broadcast television system area. The incumbent is responsible for overseeing and/or performing the installation, operation, and maintenance of all electronic and mechanical equipment associated with video production. Work involves evaluating personnel, materials, and equipment needs to ensure proper equipment operation and maintenance to maximize system performance and to meet industry and manufacturer standards. The incumbent is expected to exercise independent judgment and discretion on technical matters. Work involves determining equipment needs and preparing detailed budget requests and recommendations including written specifications, justifications, and detailed drawings. Supervision is exercised over operating and maintenance personnel. Work is reviewed by the Video Program Manager or the Public Information Director through discussion and inspection, principally for determining general progress and adherence to departmental policies and regulations. General technical or policy problems may be discussed with higher level supervision before taking action.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Five years of television broadcast maintenance experience, including two years of supervisory experience and a bachelor's degree in electronic or communications engineering, or equivalent military experience plus SBE or FCC certification. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
