VIDEO SERVICES UNIT SUPERVISOR

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to plan, coordinate, and supervise studio and field videotape productions to support training, communications, and public information needs of the Police Department and Education Channel 99. Work involves ensuring that productions are completed on time, within budget, and satisfies user requirements. Work is performed independently under the general supervision of a Police Lieutenant.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supervises technical and nontechnical employees engaged in audio and visual productions;
- Coordinates and conducts preproduction meetings with users to plan most effective use of video systems;
- Evaluates and suggests production planning approaches;
- Coordinates concept development and script treatment with users and with unit staff, or prepares them directly;
- Directs all programming either directly or through delegation of staff;
- Coordinates all aspects of assigned videotape productions, including scripts, casting, shooting schedules, and research;
- Directs actual productions, including setting lights, props, stages, technical direction of cameras, audio timing and editing;
- Determines needs and prepares detailed budget requests and recommendations including written specifications and justifications;
- Writes scripts, or assigns them to be written;
- Directs teleproduction crew activities, in the studio or on location;
- Troubleshoots equipment problems and repair;
- Supervises the setup of special equipment, remote installations, and insures that operations meet objectives;
- Evaluates program results;
- Prepares production progress reports;
- Develops short and long range goals and objectives to submit for approval;
- Sets up and maintains classroom audiovisual equipment;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- Prepare boxed or bundles of forms, tapes or other materials for distributions or mailing.
- Comprehend and make inferences from material written in the English language.
- Produce written documents in English with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees.
- Perform a broad range of supervisory responsibilities over others.
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
- Move objects weighing less than 50 pounds short and long distances.
- Communicate in the English language by phone or in person in a group or one-to-one setting.
- Install, replace or adjust filters, light bulbs, ribbons, belts or similar objects.
- Perform physical inventories.
- Remain in a sitting or standing position for extended periods of time.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Appointments to positions in the Police Department are subject to meeting appropriate polygraph and background standards.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Four years of experience in video production work including some supervisory experience. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
