DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE ASSIGNMENT:

The fundamental reason this assignment exists is to spend the majority of the time performing comprehensive fact-finding in support of law enforcement activities that directly impacts the safety of citizens. Duties include researching criminal, work, and court records using PACE, MVD, DES, DPS, Water Billing, Livescan fingerprint, or any other resource related to obtaining information regarding a suspect, based on specific requests for information from detectives or analysts.

Incumbents may determine initial criminal associations, initial patterns of criminal activity, and prepare intelligence packets and/or brief investigators or analysts on suspects' locations, vehicles, criminal histories, work information, and associates. Positions also may be responsible for performing research by conducting follow-ups; interviewing witnesses, suspects, or next of kin; and gathering evidence such as audio tapes, court documents, and photographs. In addition, incumbents assist "real-time" and run vehicle plates, research addresses, run background checks, and provide other intelligence of suspects for officers on scene.

This assignment differs from the base class by the additional research responsibilities,the autonomy and discretion used when gathering evidence, deductive reasoning used, and the criticality of the information provided. Positions with this assignment are typically assigned to the following areas: Arizona Counter Terrorism Information Center, Assaults, Intelligence, Homicide/International Criminal Apprehension Team, Gun Squad/Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Task Force, Misdemeanor, Hit and Run, Gun Enforcement, and Crimes Against Children Unit.

One position is assigned to the Intelligence/Technical/Forfeiture Unit providing assistance to all bureaus regarding electronic surveillence for investigative and prosecutorial purposes. Work involves independent decision making on technical problems encountered with the electronic equipment used.
