DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform, as a trainee, routine field and clerical duties in police department bureaus. Employees in this classification work under the direct supervision of sworn personnel and support staff. Incumbents perform varied tasks including maintenance activities in and around police facilities, transportation, and inventory of equipment, and support of clerical functions.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assists with equipment inventory, maintenance, and storage;
- Assists with community and neighborhood projects and cleanup activities;
- Performs minor clerical functions;
- Answers routine inquiries in person or by telephone;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to:
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions in the English language.
- Move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) long distances (20 feet or more).
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the outdoor elements.
- Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation to effectively perform job duties. This learning takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting.
- Communicate orally with customers, clients, or the public in face-to-face one-on-one settings, or in group settings.
- Acquire knowledge of police methods, practices, procedures and techniques and apply this knowledge to specific situations.
- Work cooperatively, courteously but firmly, with other City employees and all segments of the public.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
- Incumbents shall be no less than sixteen and no more than eighteen years of age.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
There is no experience or training requirement for this entry-level position.
