DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to serve as an entry-level trainee class prior to becoming a Police Recruit. Incumbents in this classification work under close supervision of sworn personnel. They provide assistance to sworn officers in areas such as processing prisoners, investigating traffic accidents, securing and impounding evidence at crime scenes, and performing traffic control at accident scenes. Incumbents do not perform enforcement activities. Successful performance as a Police Cadet II may lead to appointment as a Police Recruit.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Rides with and assists a police officer in searching and transporting prisoners from the arrest scene to the jail;
- Assists jail personnel in receiving and booking prisoners;
- Transports police vehicles between the maintenance shop and precincts;
- Answers routine inquiries in person or by telephone;
- Assists with traffic control and investigations at accident scenes;
- Assists officers with securing and impounding evidence at crime scenes;
- Enters or retrieves data from a computer terminal, PC or other keyboard device;
- Works with other City departments to assist with duties set by Cadet Program Supervisor;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- City of Phoenix street system to locate addresses.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions in the English language.
- Move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) long distances (20 feet or more).
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the outdoor elements.
- Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation to effectively perform job duties. This learning takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting.
- Communicate orally with customers, clients, or the public in face-to-face one-on-one settings, or in group settings.
- Acquire a knowledge of police methods, practices, procedures, and techniques and apply this knowledge to specific regulations.
- Work cooperatively, courteously but firmly, with other City employees and all segments of the public.
- Produce written documents in the English language with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
Additional Requirements:
- Candidates for positions in this classification are required to meet AZPOST medical and physical requirements. Moral integrity is an essential requirement. Trainees will be 18 to 20-1/2 years of age. At age 20 1/2, they will be processed as potential Police Recruits. Those who successfully complete this process will be placed in an Academy class; unsuccessful candidates will be terminated as Police Cadet II employees.
- This classification requires the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Graduation from high school.
