POLICE OFFICER
ASSIGN: CHIEF PILOT

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE ASSIGNMENT:

The Police Officer assigned as Chief Pilot serves as the lead trainer of the Phoenix Police Air Support Unit training program. The incumbent of this assignment must be a highly skilled pilot and trainer of pilots. The assignment also requires current commercial certification in both rotorcraft and fixed wing aircraft with a certified flight instructor's rating in the rotorcraft. Incumbents are responsible for coordinating all pilot training within the Unit, conducting or directly overseeing all phases of flight training including basic, recurrent, and advanced training. A Chief Pilot serves as the City's expert witness in aeronautical matters for all legal proceedings and in dealings with the Federal Aviation Administration.

A Police Officer assigned as Chief Pilot must have a minimum of four years within the Air Support Unit, including two years as a Certified Flight Instructor.

Work is performed under general supervision received from a Police Sergeant or other higher ranking supervisor, and performance is reviewed through observation of results and oral and written reports.
