DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform work of a manual nature which does not require a high degree of manipulative skill or an acquired skill or previous experience in order to do an effective job. Work is generally performed under the immediate direction of a supervisor, but many types of work assigned may be very routine and repetitive in nature and after once learned can be carried on without difficulty and only under general supervision.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Operates a small truck to pick up items for delivery to other City facilities;
- Unloads truck and stocks items in storeroom;
- Delivers inter-office mail to various City facilities;
- Cleans litter from roadside areas under the direction of a supervisor;
- Fuels cars, trucks, and heavy equipment;
- Lubricates and greases trucks and heavy equipment such as articulated loaders and backhoes;
- Inspects tires for wear and proper inflation;
- Operates side loader and rear loader garbage trucks;
- Visually inspects vehicles for mechanical defects and reports findings to appropriate personnel;
- Maintains fuel and mileage records;
- Drains air tanks on Solid Waste equipment;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to:
- Move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) short distances (20 feet or less).
- Move light objects (less than 20 pounds) long distances (more than 20 feet).
- Bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time (i.e., picks up trash from road side, works under equipment).
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
- Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation. This learning takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting.
- Lift arms above shoulder level (i.e., throws bags and loose trash into a truck, enters the cab of a vehicle, uses a steam cleaner.
- Climb ladders or steps to reach objects.
- Understand and follow oral and written instruction in the English language.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees and the public.
- Enter the cab of a vehicle that is 3.5 feet off the ground.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. In addition, individuals may be required to pass an Arizona Department of Transportation physical exam and possess the appropriate commercial driver's license (CDL). Pre-employment drug testing is required for CDL positions. Employees in CDL positions will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
There is no experience or training requirement for this entry level position.
