SEMISKILLED WORKER
JOB CODE 70010
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform a variety of tasks involving the use of some acquired skills. Some incumbents act as lead workers over Laborers doing routine, manual work or perform some skilled trades helper work. Typically, work is performed under the supervision of a Foreman or skilled craftsman who issues oral or written instructions and inspects work frequently.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Drives and operates various motor vehicles including automobiles, vans, trucks, forklift, and other similar equipment;
- Performs routine custodial tasks such as sweeping, spot painting, graffiti and trash removal, and fence mending;
- Prunes, trims, and weeds flower beds;
- Spreads and tamps asphalt from a truck and compresses it into holes;
- Attaches and tows equipment such as cement mixers and compressors or trailers holding equipment;
- Performs periodic routine preventative maintenance on vehicles, pumps, and boosters;
- Performs striping, repair, or installation operations;
- Sets out and picks up barricades and lane cones, and signs work areas to protect work crews;
- Prepares athletic fields for scheduled play including dragging diamonds, measuring and laying out football and soccer fields, and erecting and repairing backstops and goal posts;
- Assists skilled trades persons with duties as assigned.
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to:
- Work outdoors in an aircraft operating area using required ear and hearing protection.
- Moves objects weighing up to 50 pounds long distances (more than 20 feet).
- Operate mobile radio in accordance with City policy and F.C.C. rules and regulations.
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
- Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation. This learning takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting.
- Work outdoors at night under artificial or poor lighting conditions.
- Climb ladders or steps to reach objects.
- Understand and follow oral instructions in the English language.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. In addition, individuals may be required to pass an Arizona Department of Transportation physical exam and possess the appropriate commercial driver's license (C.D.L.). Pre-employment drug testing is required for C.D.L. positions. Employees in C.D.L. positions will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Six months of experience performing general manual work. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
