Job Description
TRADES HELPER
JOB CODE 70060
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
Effective Date: 10/99A
![]()
The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform skilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance, repair, alteration, and remodeling of buildings, offices, houses, and other City facilities. Work is performed independently, in crews, or by assisting a journey-level classification, such as Building Maintenance Worker. Assignments involve numerous trade areas, such as carpentry, plumbing, roofing, painting, and concrete/masonry, although some positions may specialize in one area. The work of a Trades Helper is limited in the breadth and/or depth of trade skills applied, relative to journey classifications. This work includes the less complex, more routine, and lower skill range tasks of what would otherwise be assigned to a journey level worker. The jobs are fairly predictable in terms of required materials, tools, and work methods. In instances where the work is consistently at a highly skilled level, incumbents are working in an assistance or "helper" capacity. In cases where work is performed independently, there are reasonable means within a department, division, or work group to provide technical assistance to the incumbents in case unforeseen problems arise, including the ability to escalate work orders to journey classes if needed. Work is inspected while in progress or upon completion.
