STREET MAINTENANCE WORKER II
JOB CODE 70120
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to operate trucks and other automotive and mechanical equipment and to perform various manual labor tasks associated with maintaining streets and storm sewers. Work includes performing preventive maintenance for assigned vehicles and directing the work of Street Maintenance Workers I. The greater frequency of operating moderately-sized automotive equipment, the responsibility for directing the work of others, and greater independence with which work is performed, differentiates this classification from Street Maintenance Worker I. Work is performed under the supervision of a Street Maintenance Foreman II.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Directs the work of subordinate street maintenance workers;
- Operates trucks, such as dump trucks with capacities ranging between two and six yards, to transport material and equipment;
- Operates a three-ton roller;
- Operates mechanical equipment, such as a jackhammer, pneumatic compacting equipment, and a crackseal kettle and emulsion spray wand;
- Rakes and tamps asphalt and spreads aggregate on street repair projects;
- Sets out and picks up barricades, lane cones, and warning signs to channel traffic around work crews;
- Performs preventative maintenance tasks, such as making simple adjustments, replacing minor parts, and lubricating equipment, in order to keep equipment in proper operating condition;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

- Traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in equipment operation.
- Techniques and methods of street repair and maintenance.
- City Traffic Barricade Manual.
- Develop supervisory skills and perform lead responsibilities over others.
- Operate trucks and other automotive equipment, such as a six-yard dump truck and three-ton roller.
- Operate power driven machinery such as a jackhammer, pneumatic tamper, or other equally sized equipment.
- Coordinate the movement of more than one limb simultaneously, such as operating the clutch and accelerator on a six-yard dump truck.
- Move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) short distances (20 feet or less).
- Move debris, dirt, or other material from one place to another using a shovel, rake, or similar tool.
- Travel over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces.
- Remain in a standing position for extended periods of time.
- Work outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.
- Perform basic preventative maintenance for equipment, such as making simple mechanical adjustments, replacing minor parts, and lubricating equipment.
- Perform simple mathematical calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) to calculate quantities, times, distances, weights and measures.
- Read and comply with simple instructions written in English.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Communicate orally with co-workers and the general public in a one-to-one setting.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees and the general public.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- This classification requires the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. In addition, individuals are required to pass an Arizona Department of Transportation physical exam and possess the appropriate commercial driver's license. Pre-employment drug testing is required, and employees will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
One year of experience in performing a wide variety of manual labor tasks and in operating small vehicles and power equipment associated with street and storm sewer maintenance (one year at the level of Street Maintenance Worker I). Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
