STREET MAINTENANCE FOREMAN I

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to oversee and participate in the work of a small group of Laborers, Street Maintenance Workers, and Equipment Operators engaged in the repair and maintenance of streets and alleys. Work assignments are received orally or in writing by a Street Maintenance Foreman II who reviews work through on-site inspections or reports.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supervises crews of Street Maintenance Workers and Equipment Operators in the cleaning and maintenance of catch basins drainage ditches, grading shoulders and dirt streets and mowing grass and weeds on improved major and collector streets;
- Supervises the work of Laborers engaged in cleaning downtown area streets and alleys;
- Ensures that proper safety devices and equipment are placed on street maintenance jobs;
- Conducts on-site safety meetings with work crew;
- Completes time sheets and production reports;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:Ability to:
- Materials, methods, equipment and techniques commonly used in street maintenance and repair activities.
- Hazards of street maintenance work and safety precautions necessary to minimize these hazards.
- Perform a broad range of supervisory responsibilities over others.
- Communicate orally in the English language with customers, clients, and the public in a face-to-face, one-to-one setting.
- Understand and carry out written and oral instructions in the English language.
- Complete daily forms.
- Move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) long distances (greater than 20 feet).
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the outdoor elements.
- Travel over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces.
- Work cooperatively with others.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license, and have an acceptable driving record. Additionally, some positions will require individuals to pass an Arizona Department of Transportation physical exam and possess the appropriate commercial driver's license. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential or marginal functions depending upon work assignment, location, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Three years of experience in street maintenance and repair work at the level of Laborer or higher. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
