STREET MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to supervise street maintenance activities in a major area or geographic section of the City. Work includes developing work schedules, planning and directing, through foremen, the work of various maintenance crews connecting with street maintenance, street cleaning and storm drainage facility maintenance programs. Some positions are assigned to direct general maintenance activities in one of the geographic services areas or specialized City-wide programs such as preventive maintenance or street cleaning. An incumbent is responsible for checking performance of the various work units, investigating citizens' complaints, making reports to the supervisor of work accomplished and making recommendations as to future assignments and tasks to be performed. Work is performed under the direction of the Street Maintenance Superintendent who evaluates performance based upon results achieved.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supervises Foremen, Equipment Operators, Laborers and Semiskilled Workers engaged in widening various intersections; sealing, coating, oiling and stabilizing roadways; grading, leveling, filling and excavating all arterial, collector or local streets and alleys in the City; and street cleaning and storm drainage facilities maintenance;
- Oversees street maintenance activities which require the services of automotive equipment such as a hoist, truck, blade, roller, heater-planer or related heavy street repair and construction equipment;
- Conducts field survey to determine necessary repairs and preventive maintenance;
- Supervises and directs safety activities;
- Advises supervisor of the need for additional supplies;
- Reports unusual problems to the supervisor for administrative instructions;
- Prepares reports on the status of action taken on complaints;
- Conducts field analysis of mechanical troubles for proper reporting to the Equipment Management Division;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- Materials used, and methods and practices followed in street maintenance, street cleaning and storm drainage maintenance.
- Equipment and work skills necessary to accomplish varied street maintenance tasks.
- Perform a broad range of supervisory responsibilities over others.
- Communicate orally in the English language with customers, clients, and the public using a telephone or in a one-to-one or group setting.
- Produce written documents in the English language with clearly-organized thoughts with proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
- Understand and follow complex oral and written instructions in the English language.
- Keep cost records and prepare work and time reports.
- Work cooperatively with others.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid drivers' license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential or marginal functions.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Four years of experience in street and storm sewer maintenance and cleaning, including three years of experience as a foreman in construction and maintenance, supplemented by college courses in engineering, management or administration. Other combinations of experience and education which meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
