SIGN SPECIALIST I

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform skilled but repetitive sign preparation layouts and silk screen processing. This class is distinguished from Semiskilled Workers in the Sign Shop by the primary assignment of sign layout, in addition to silk screening duties, to the Sign Specialist I. Work is closely reviewed at each stage of the process for neatness and conformance to established standards. Supervision is provided by a Traffic Maintenance Foreman III who evaluates work based upon results achieved.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Performs layout work for the production of signs;
- Uses precut letters to prepare signs for silk screening following previously established designs;
- Performs silk screening operations;
- Applies reflective sheeting to signs;
- Ensures that an adequate supply of working materials is available in own work area;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:Ability to:
- Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in manufacturing signs.
- Sign layout and material cutting procedures.
- Draw or letter charts, signs or similar objects.
- Produce written documents in the English language using clearly organized thoughts with proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
- Understand and follow oral and written directions in the English language.
- Makes skillful manipulations of small objects.
- Work with cleaning fluids, chemicals, inks, paints, or similar solutions using only normal protective equipment.
- Bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time.
- Operate power tools.
- Work cooperatively with others.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
- Comprehend written material in the English language.
- Exercise safety precautions and conform to safety rules and procedures.
- Establish priorities for own workload based upon such factors as need for immediate action, work schedule, and future needs.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid drivers' license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential or marginal functions depending upon work assignment, location, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
One year of experience in sign production and the ability to read and write. Other combinations of experience and education which meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
