EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to safely and efficiently operate light automotive equipment for the City. Units operated include: pickup trucks, dump trucks, stake body or flatbed trucks, vans, showmobile, and mechanical sweepers. Some positions occasionally operate equipment of more than two-ton capacity. Employees also load and unload materials from vehicles. Work ordinarily follows an established routine, and some positions perform manual and clerical duties in addition to equipment operation. Assignments are made in detail and work is reviewed in process and upon completion.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Operates pickup truck, small dump truck, stake body or flatbed truck, showmobile, or van, of less than two-ton capacity;
- Operates light trucks to haul trash to landfill and transport persons to work areas;
- Operates mechanical sweepers to clean airport terminal transportation areas;
- Operates sound equipment at major recreation events;
- Performs physical labor tasks in addition to equipment operation;
- Loads and unloads materials onto and from vehicles;
- Performs clerical functions such as answering phones and filing and performs routine messenger services;
- Inspects vehicle on daily basis to ensure it is fully operational and meets safety standards;
- Occasionally operates equipment at a higher level;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

- Principles and practices of light automotive equipment operation.
- Geography and street system of the City.
- Setup of technical sound equipment such as microphones, speakers, and soundboards.
- Operate technical sound equipment.
- Understand and comply with oral and written instructions in the English language.
- Work cooperatively with employees and the public.
- Communicate orally with co-workers using a two-way radio and in face-to-face, one-on-one settings.
- Work under hazardous conditions where physical danger exists due to mechanical equipment.
- Work in environmental extremes such as heat, cold, air pollution, dust, rain, etc.
- Exercise safety precautions and conform to safety rules and procedures as a regular and active part of performing assigned duties.
- Sort, separate, arrange, file or distribute incoming mail, products or material.
- Coordinate the movement of more than one limb simultaneously (Example: operating the clutch and accelerator on a vehicle).
- Move objects weighing between 20-50 pounds distances greater than 20 feet.
- Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation. This learning takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting.
- Travel across rough, uneven or rocky surfaces.
- Bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time (Example: load and unload materials).
- Remain in a standing or sitting position for extended periods of time.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment or shift.
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. In addition, individuals may be required to pass an Arizona Department of Transportation physical exam and possess the appropriate commercial driver's license (CDL). Pre-employment drug testing is required for CDL positions. Employees in CDL positions will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions require working irregular hours, shifts, holidays, and weekends.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Six months of experience in the operation of equipment heavier than ordinary passenger vehicles. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
