MINIBUS OPERATOR
JOB CODE 72100
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to transport eligible elderly and disabled citizens to and from medical appointments, adult day care, City of Phoenix Senior Centers, hospitals, and social service agencies in passenger transport vehicles ranging in capacity from five to forty passengers. Work involves picking up citizens according to instructions and established schedule, transporting them to and from specified destinations, and assisting them in boarding and exiting the vehicle. Incumbents of this classification work under the close supervision of the Assistant Transportation Supervisor or the Transportation Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Drives vehicles capable of transporting large numbers of Senior Services clients to and from Senior Centers and health and welfare organizations within the City limits, in accordance with instructions and established schedules;
- Aids passengers who need physical assistance in boarding and exiting vehicles;
- Operates a mechanical or manual wheelchair lift and utilizes a tie-down system and established transportation procedures for transporting passengers in wheelchairs;
- Takes passengers' packages to the front door of their residence;
- Reports all vehicle malfunctions, incidents of citizens not showing or no longer needing transportation, and other unusual events that occur in the course of the work, to the dispatcher by using a two-way radio;
- Records times, destinations, and mileage in a log book;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- The geographic layout and streets within the Phoenix city limits.
- Communicate in the English language by two-way radio and in person in a one-to-one or group setting.
- Observe or monitor objects and people's behavior to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards.
- Comprehend and make inferences from written material.
- Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Aid passengers in boarding and exiting vehicles, such as offering an arm for them to hold and maneuvering passengers in wheelchairs over curbs, up ramps or to obtain the proper position for a wheelchair lift or tie-down system.
- Learn to operate and to regularly use a mechanical or manual wheelchair lift.
- Bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time, such as tying down wheelchairs and operating a manual wheelchair lift.
- Move light objects, such as packages weighing less than 20 pounds, short distances (less than 20 feet).
- Move heavy objects, such as in assisting clients in wheelchairs and transferring packages weighing less than 50 pounds, short distances (less than 20 feet).
- Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
- Learn job-related material primarily through oral instruction and observation which takes place mainly in an on-the-job training setting.
- Remain in a sitting position for extended periods of time.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees and the general public.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- This classification requires the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. In addition, individuals are required to pass an Arizona Department of Transportation physical exam and possess the appropriate commercial driver's license. Pre-employment drug testing is required, and employees will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Six months of experience in the operation of large capacity passenger transport vehicles. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
