MOTOR BROOM OPERATOR

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to operate heavy-duty, motorized street sweeping equipment to clean the surfaces of City streets. Work includes performing routine preventative maintenance, servicing vehicles and making minor running repairs on vehicles. Work is performed under the supervision of a Street Maintenance Foreman II who periodically inspects work for compliance with safety standards and efficiency of operation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Operates motorized street sweeping equipment to clean street surfaces in a manner that controls dust and prevents damage to the sweeper, street structures or automobiles;
- Prepares motorized street sweeping equipment for operation by inspecting gas and oil levels, radiator, water tank levels, air cleaners, tires, and other items as outlined by commercial drivers license regulations, and replenishes or replaces items as needed;
- Fills water tank from City fire hydrant as needed while working on assigned route;
- Maintains equipment in proper operating condition by washing and cleaning brooms, the dirt elevator, and the hopper, and makes adjustments to gutter broom, pickup broom, broom speeds, dirt deflector, and dirt shoes;
- Records information related to sweeper operation by completing sweeper reports in a standard format as specified by the City form;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- Applicable safety rules involved in equipment operation.
- Operate motor broom in a skillful and safe manner and according to applicable traffic laws.
- Observe or monitor objects to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards.
- Clean equipment using appropriate materials.
- Perform simple maintenance tasks, such as making simple adjustments, replacing minor parts, and replenishing fluids.
- Remove and replace fire hydrant caps.
- Use graphic instructions such as quarter section maps.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Communicate in the English language by radio or in person in a one-to-one setting.
- Work in a variety of environmental extremes, such as heat, cold, air pollution, dust, and rain.
- Remain in a sitting position for extended periods of time.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees and the general public.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- This classification requires the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. In addition, individuals are required to pass an Arizona Department of Transportation physical exam and possess the appropriate commercial driver's license. Pre-employment drug testing is required, and employees will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment, or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
(1) 92 documented hours on heavy-duty, motorized street sweeping equipment, or (2) be qualified for "out-of-class" pay on similar equipment. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
