The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform semi- skilled tasks in the repair and mechanical maintenance of automotive or other motorized equipment. Depending on the nature of the assignment, Equipment Maintenance Helpers work under the general supervision of Heavy Equipment Mechanics, Equipment Repair Specialists, Parks Foremen II, Body Repair Specialists, Welders or Automotive Mechanics. Some positions manage their own special activity under the direction of an Equipment Shop Foreman. Some positions assist any of the above skilled workers on complex repair jobs. Assignments are given orally and in writing and work is checked through inspection or through the performance of the equipment serviced.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Repairs or replaces parts such as fan belts, lights, filters, and batteries;
- Inspects, greases and lubricates motorized equipment;
- Repairs tires in the shop and on service calls;
- Keeps record related to automotive repair work, work order requests, labor expenditures, job status, estimates, and proposed or completed projects;
- Communicates unsafe conditions or accidents/injuries to supervisor in order to facilitate prompt correction or reporting.
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:Skill in:
- Mechanical parts of motorized equipment.
- The standard tools, materials, methods, and practices of the trade.
- Hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Ability to:
- The use and care of hand and power tools used in all phases of automotive repair and maintenance.
- Greasing, lubricating, and servicing motorized equipment and replacing parts.
- Complete forms to record or report information in standard format as specified by the form.
- Install, replace or adjust filters, belts, or similar objects to maintain equipment.
- Read, understand, and apply information from charts, graphs, and manuals.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees.
- Remain in a standing position for extended periods of time.
- Bend or stoop repeatedly over time to check air pressure on tires.
- Move objects between 20-50 pounds long distances (more than 20 feet).
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions in the English language.
- Manipulate tools in areas of limited space.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment or shift.
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. In addition, individuals may be required to pass an Arizona Department of Transportation physical exam and possess the appropriate commercial driver's license (C.D.L.). Pre-employment drug testing is required for C.D.L. positions. Employees in C.D.L. positions will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
Acceptable Experience and Training:
Six months of experience in semi-skilled work in a motorized equipment repair shop or garage, or three years of experience as a garage attendant in a work situation which provided familiarity with a variety of equipment servicing functions. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
