EQUIPMENT SERVICE WORKER I

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform routine manual tasks involving the operation of automotive equipment, inspection and repair of equipment tires and tubes, routine automotive maintenance, and simple mechanical repairs. The duties include cleaning and maintenance work in an assigned area; cleaning of vehicles and parts; inspecting, patching, and testing of tires and tubes; and performing simple mechanical repairs. Assignments are received either orally or in writing and are performed under the direction of an Equipment Shop Foreman. Results are evaluated by the Equipment Shop Foreman and through the proper functioning and performance of the equipment repaired.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Performs preventative vehicle and equipment maintenance and repairs;
- Acts as a helper in the performance of fleet repair;
- Steam cleans vehicles and related mechanical parts;
- Responds to tire service calls and repairs, removes and replaces wheels and tires;
- Inspects tires for wear and proper inflation;
- Checks and maintains proper wheel balance;
- Sweeps and mops shop floors;
- Keeps equipment and supplies in order and requests re-supply when needed;
- Shuttles/transports automotive and light truck equipment of less than two-ton capacity to vendors and other City locations;
- Operates hoists and forklift trucks for loading and unloading merchandise;
- Checks motor pool vehicles in and out, recording the times, person using it, and mileage traveled;
- Fuels and services fleet equipment;
- Road tests vehicles to ensure repairs have been satisfactorily completed;
- Inspects vehicles for mechanical defects and repairs defects;
- Interacts with using departments or divisions on vehicle status;
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- Principles and practices of automotive equipment operation.
- Traffic laws and ordinances regulating the operation of automotive equipment.
- Service requirements of automotive equipment.
- Less complex mechanical parts of automotive equipment.
- Tire selection and air pressures for vehicles.
- Methods used in testing tire wear and corrective measures for eliminating excessive tire wear.
- Inspection methods used in checking wheel alignment.
- Methods and tools used to remove and replace wheels and tires to vulcanize tubes.
- Methods, machines, and tools used in wheel balancing practices.
- Move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) long distances (greater than 20 feet).
- Use common hand tools, such as hammers, saws, screwdrivers, or similar tools to perform minor repairs.
- Bend or stoop repeatedly or continually over time.
- Operate computerized work order system.
- Operate various types of automotive and tire repair equipment.
- Perform minor mechanical adjustments.
- Carry out oral and written instructions in the English language and keep simple written records.
- Work in small cramped areas to perform repairs.
- Work cooperatively with others.
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. In addition, individuals may be required to pass an Arizona Department of Transportation physical exam and possess the appropriate commercial driver's license (CDL). Pre-employment drug testing is required for CDL positions. Employees in CDL positions will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Knowledge of general maintenance and the performance of routine service on automotive equipment and parts.
