HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform skilled tasks in the mechanical repair and maintenance of heavy trucks, earth moving, and related construction equipment including road graders, gasoline and diesel powered tractors, garbage trucks, dump trucks, and dozers. Positions involving the skilled repair of fire equipment are also assigned to this class because of the specialized nature of the equipment. Work assignments are received in the form of general oral or written work orders, but the employee is expected to determine the nature and extent of needed repairs. General supervision is received from an Equipment Shop Foreman and work is reviewed through the proper functioning and performance of equipment repaired.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Repairs and adjusts hydraulic pumps, safety valves, and load packers on garbage and dump trucks;
- Attends special training and familiarization workshops dealing with innovations in heavy equipment operations, repairs, and maintenance;
- Inspects, repairs and adjusts diesel power units, hydraulic systems, injection valves and systems, mold boards, and scarifiers on road graders;
- Inspects, adjusts and repairs gasoline and diesel tractors, and hydraulic and cable operated attachments on tractors;
- Repairs and maintains trenching machines and sets to proper grade;
- Performs incidental welding operations on equipment;
- Communicates any unsafe conditions or accidents/injuries in a timely manner to the supervisor in order to facilitate prompt correction or reporting.
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.

- The operation and maintenance requirements of heavy duty construction equipment.
Ability to:
- The care and use of hand and power tools employed in all phases of heavy equipment mechanical maintenance and repair work.
- The use of automotive servicing equipment such as A/C recycler, hydraulic jack, or emission analyzer.
- Diagnose defects in heavy duty equipment.
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions in the English language.
- Complete form to record or report information in standard format as specified by the form.
- Observe or monitor objects to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards.
- Install, replace or adjust filters, belts, or similar objects to maintain equipment.
- Make fine, highly controlled muscular movement to adjust the position of levers to repair equipment.
- Make skillful, controlled manipulations of small objects to repair equipment (i.e., installs fasteners in instrumentation clusters).
- Read, understand, and apply information from charts, graphs, and manuals.
- Work cooperatively with other City employees.
- Remain in a standing position for extended periods of time.
- Lift arms above shoulder level to install and remove transmission components.
- Bend or stoop repeatedly over time to check air pressure on tires.
- Manipulate tools in areas of limited space.
- Move heavy objects (50 pounds or more) long distances (more than 20 feet).
- Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Additional Requirements:
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending upon work location, assignment or shift.
- Some positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. In addition, individuals may be required to pass an Arizona Department of Transportation physical exam and possess the appropriate commercial driver's license (C.D.L.). Pre-employment drug testing is required for C.D.L. positions. Employees in C.D.L. positions will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Five years of experience as a skilled automotive mechanic, including some experience in the repair and maintenance of heavy duty construction or fire fighting equipment; or completion of a recognized heavy duty equipment mechanic apprenticeship. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
