The Heavy Equipment Mechanic on the Emergency Equipment Repair assignment repairs Fire Department and Airport specialized firefighting and crash rescue equipment. Work includes performing minor and major repair work on engines, turrets, and pumps; synchronizing dual engines; rebuilding gas and diesel engines; and performing electrical repairs. Additionally, this assignment completes plumbing repairs, rebuilds valves, and repairs metal and fiberglass tanks. Incumbents may be called for standby when there are major fires or emergencies. This assignment differs from the Heavy Equipment Mechanic in the emergency nature of the equipment, the degree of sophistication of the equipment, and the additional attachments to this vehicle not normally found on other equipment.
