EQUIPMENT REPAIR SPECIALIST

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform skilled level work in a specialized field of equipment repair. Fields of specialization include electrical systems, differentials and automatic transmissions, gas or diesel engine rebuilding, front-end, frame and chassis work, motorcycle repair or hydraulic system repair and overhaul. The specialized skill required exceeds that which would be expected of a mechanic performing generalized automotive repair tasks. Assignments are normally received in the form of oral or written references to defective equipment. Work is performed with considerable independence under the general supervision of an Equipment Shop Foreman and is checked by the satisfactory performance of equipment installed or repaired.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Locates and adjusts defects in motor equipment;
- Installs and repairs generators, starters, distributors, magnetos, lights, switches, relays, regulators, electric clocks, flashers, transmission governors, and speedometers;
- Installs, repairs, and performs preventive maintenance to special devices and heavy duty kits such as high output, slow speed generators, regulators, red lights, spotlights, sirens or miscellaneous interior lights;
- Diagnoses transmission and differential problems and makes decisions regarding necessary repairs.
- Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of:Skill in:
- Principles and practices of equipment repair in one of the following specialized fields: electrical systems, front-end including chassis, frame and differential, engine rebuilding, hydraulics or motorcycle repair.
- Accepted methods, practices, materials, and tools of the specialty field to which assigned.
- Hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Ability to:
- Use and care for hand and power tools used in all phases of automotive repair and maintenance.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions in the English language.
- Diagnose defects in automotive equipment.
- Complete forms to record or report information in standard format as specified by the form.
- Communicate any unsafe conditions or accidents/injuries in a timely manner to supervisor in order to facilitate prompt correction or reporting.
- Communicate orally in the English language with customers, clients, and the public using a telephone and in group and face-to-face, one-to-one settings.
- Observe or monitor objects to determine compliance with prescribed operating or safety standards.
- Make skillful, controlled manipulations of small objects to repair equipment.
- Read, understand, and apply information from charts, graphs, and manuals.
- Work cooperatively with others.
- Manipulate tools in areas of limited space, such as screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches or other similar tools.
- Move objects weighing up to 50 pounds long distances (more than 20 feet).
- Adapt tools and materials to special problems.
Additional Requirements:
- This classification requires the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. In addition, individuals are required to pass an Arizona Department of Transportation physical exam and possess the appropriate commercial driver's license. Pre-employment drug testing is required, and employees will be subject to unannounced alcohol and drug testing as a condition of continued employment. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
- Some positions will require the performance of other essential and marginal functions depending on work assignment, location or shift.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
Three years of experience as an equipment mechanic above the apprentice level, including one of the specialized fields mentioned above or six months of experience as an automotive mechanic and completion of a recognized apprenticeship in a specialized field. Certification as a General Automobile Mechanic by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence may be substituted for all experience other than the specified experience or apprenticeship in a specialized field. Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
